Mr. Cottom utilizes an outside-the-box approach to every situation, which allows him to craft innovative solutions to the unique problems facing each client.

Mr. Cottom’s previous experience exposed him to a range of family law cases, which has sharpened his understanding of the issues his clients face in court.

At the start of each case, Mr. Cottom asks his clients to provide a clear list of goals and objectives, and to identify which are most important to them.

“I look to illustrate the various avenues available to help us achieve those goals,” Mr. Cottom said, “along with the odds of success for each course of action. Coupling clear objectives with an understanding of the potential outcomes ensures that the attorney and client are in tune with one another throughout the length and often complicated legal process.”

Mr. Cottom received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Cordell & Cordell, Mr. Cottom practiced at a small litigation firm where he was exposed to a variety of cases including family law, estates, criminal defense, and land use/zoning law.


Mr. Cottom is the Co-President of the New Lawyers’ Section of the El Paso County Bar, a group that provides networking and CLE opportunities for local attorneys under 40 or practicing fewer than five  years.

In 2016, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for Pikes Peak Justice and Pro Bono Center, the charitable arm of the El Paso County Bar Association.

Also in 2016, he was confirmed to the advisory council for the Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance, an initiative to promote the outdoor recreation industry as an economic driver for the Pikes Peak region.

He is also a member of the American Bar Association and Colorado Bar Association.
