Cordell & Cordell Divorce Attorney Scott TroutScott C. Trout is the Executive/Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Cordell & Cordell, a firm focusing exclusively on domestic relations. Mr. Trout practices all types of divorce, including complex asset and business valuation, in Missouri, Illinois and Georgia.

He has been recognized as one of the leading attorneys in the family law area. He has excellent courtroom presence and is well respected by judges, opposing counsel and most importantly, his clients. Mr. Trout has appeared in all three District Appellate Courts in the State of Missouri, the Missouri Supreme Court, the 5th District Appellate Court in Illinois, as well as the 7th Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals.

“Most children are confused, afraid, hurt, sad, angry, and anxious when they sense or are told about their parents’ divorce,” he said. “Interestingly, these are the same emotions that their parents often experience during the divorce process.”

Licenses & Admissions

Mr. Trout is licensed in Missouri, Illinois and Georgia. He is admitted to practice in all three District Appellate Courts in the state of Missouri, the Missouri Supreme Court, the 5th District Appellate Court in Illinois, as well as the 7th Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals.


He received his Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law and his B.S.B.A. in Finance Economics and Philosophy from Rockhurst University.

Professional Experience

Mr. Trout was appointed in 2008 to serve on the St. Louis County Domestic Violence Council to review and make recommendations to changes in the law regarding Orders of Protection and to provide input as to reorganizing the court structure in hearing ex parte Orders of Protection from the perspective of representing men facing divorce.

He was appointed in 2010 as a Special Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the Domestic Violence Court in St. Louis. This court assists men facing criminal violations for Adult Abuse/Domestic Violence actions.


Mr. Trout is a member of the Missouri, Illinois and Georgia State Bar Associations.


Mr. Trout has been recognized by his peers for his professional accomplishments by being named a Super Lawyer in the area of Domestic Relations from 2006-2009 and 2015-2017 by Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters rating service of outstanding lawyers.

Mr. Trout frequently appears in national media outlets discussing various issues affecting men and divorce, including an interview on The Dr. Phil Show about Social Networking and Divorce.

He is a prominent speaker, and has presented to fellow attorneys at CLE seminars regarding the state of matrimony and numerous Family Law topics.

Mr. Trout was named to the St. Louis Business Journal’s list of Who’s Who in law. He also joined a panel of family law experts for the Business Journal to discuss various aspects of the divorce process.

Mr. Trout commented on the role of Facebook in divorce cases with KFAB News Radio in Omaha, Neb., was interviewed by NJBIZ for an article on Cordell & Cordell’s New Jersey expansion, and spoke with the Virginian-Pilot about the firm’s expansion in Virginia.

He is the author of several articles, including “The Role of the Child and Fighting for Custody” and “Drafting Settlement and Separation Agreements.”

Mr. Trout has also appeared on numerous radio interviews, including on WHAS Radio in Louisville to discuss religion and divorce and other legal custody concerns in the wake of the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce.
