Regional Partner Bryan Abercrombie Discusses ‘Facebook Divorces’ With KTRH
About This Episode
“Facebook divorces” have become more and more prevalent with the rise of social media.
Cordell & Cordell Regional Partner and Team Leader Bryan Abercrombie recently spoke with KTRH 740 AM NewsRadio in Houston to discuss how social media’s impact on divorce cases has continued to grow over the past several years.
“In almost every case nowadays we ask for discovery about Facebook timelines,” Mr. Abercrombie said. “Just about every attorney does because there’s just so much information on social media.”
Although there are no laws governing Facebook usage in divorce proceedings, Mr. Abercrombie said he first noticed Facebook timelines and photos being introduced as evidence around 2010 or 2011. Common examples would be a photo of someone drinking at a party or on vacation when the individual has claimed he or she doesn’t have time to see his or her kids.
Mr. Abercrombie recommends limiting social media usage during divorce and custody cases and advises clients to stop posting about their personal lives.
