Joe Cordell Tackles Paternity Problems On Huffington Post
In his latest Huffington Post column, Cordell & Cordell Principal Partner Joe Cordell laid out the various problems that arise in family courts related to paternity.
While paternity is a serious problem in family courts, there is unfortunately very little being done to fix the issues.
“From fathers being required to pay support for children that DNA tests prove are not theirs to fathers blocked by the courts from being involved in their children’s lives,” Mr. Cordell wrote, “family courts have much to do before the current system is fixed and justice is served.”
Mr. Cordell detailed several paternity problems currently plaguing society such as paternity fraud, which has been described as a “national epidemic,” and the issues facing unwed fathers as they are given essentially no legal rights to their children until they establish paternity.
“There are numerous different scenarios where paternity can create issues that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where changes need to be made,” Mr. Cordell said. “However, the current system is clearly not working for many fathers and children, which is why it is in desperate need of an overhaul. And yet, there has been little in the way of effort to institute change.”
