About Shevata Kumar, Litigation Attorney
Ms. Kumar said she was drawn to family law for the opportunity to advocate for clients navigating a challenging and emotionally complex time in their lives.
“The wide-ranging nature of the practice allows me to apply my transactional and litigation background to deliver practical, well-rounded solutions, while providing steady guidance and strong advocacy,” Ms. Kumar said.
Ms. Kumar joined Cordell & Cordell after practicing family law as an Associate Attorney with Argyris Mah, LLP in San Jose, California, where she represented clients in matters involving child custody, support, property division, and dissolution proceedings. Her practice included drafting pleadings, motions, marital settlement agreements, and stipulated judgments, along with conducting legal research, managing discovery, and preparing cases for hearing.
Before practicing family law, Ms. Kumar spent approximately one year as an Associate Deputy City Attorney for the City of San Jose, advising City departments on municipal governance and drafting ordinances, resolutions, contracts, permits, and other legal documents. Prior to that, she practiced asbestos defense litigation with Lewis Brisbois in San Francisco for about a year, handling complex litigation matters including legal research, motion practice, discovery, depositions, and court appearances.
Ms. Kumar received her Bachelor of Science in Managerial Economics with an emphasis in Finance and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of California, Davis. She holds a Master’s degree in Economics from California State University, East Bay, and a Juris Doctor from San Francisco Law School, earning both degrees while working full-time. Before entering the legal profession, she spent nearly a decade in commercial contracting, procurement, regulatory compliance, and legal operations across the technology, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and utility industries — experience she believes continues to shape her practical approach to resolving complex legal matters.
Ms. Kumar believes that strong advocacy in family law goes hand in hand with steady, practical guidance, and she brings that combination to every client she represents.
