Industry Leader

Throughout his career, Mr. Cordell has displayed dedication to bettering the legal landscape in Missouri. He has founded two successful firms – Cordell & Cordell and Cordell Planning Partners – that have helped tens of thousands of clients.

In 1990, while practicing general law, Mr. Cordell decided to focus his practice on helping guys through divorce. He took his passion and created the largest family law firm focused on representing men in divorce in the world. The firm has grown to nearly 300 attorneys and more than 100 legal staff in more than 100 offices throughout the United States and United Kingdom.

In 2016, Mr. Cordell, who is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, founded Cordell Planning Partners. The elder care law firm provides individuals the resources and information needed to make responsible decisions concerning their estate, assets, health, and well-being as they age. Since its inception, the firm has grown to include offices in four states with hundreds of clients.

Continuing Education

Continuous learning and education are a prominent component of Mr. Cordell’s success. He is committed to providing these opportunities to other attorneys through ongoing education both internally and externally. Mr. Cordell is the visionary and driving force behind Cordell & Cordell’s annual daylong CLE Domestic Litigation Forum, which provides attorneys the opportunity to earn a year’s worth of Missouri CLE credits in one day for free. Now in its 20th year, it has grown in size and popularity each year for its relevant and timely commentary on family law issues from experienced litigators and is attended by nearly 600 attorneys.

Cordell College was developed to provide an additional layer of practice development for Cordell & Cordell attorneys. The internal curriculum program ensures Cordell & Cordell attorneys are not only highly skilled in domestic litigation, but also in areas such as organization, time management, and providing communication to their clients that is transparent and easy to understand.

Attorney-CPA

As a licensed attorney and CPA, Mr. Cordell is an advocate for dually-licensed professionals who endeavor to practice with all of their qualifications. He is an active member of the American Academy of Attorney-CPAs, which aims to afford networking opportunities, quality education, and resources to help its members further their practice. On July 6, 2014, Mr. Cordell was installed as the 51st president of the AAA-CPA, during the organization’s 50th Anniversary Annual Meeting. In 2017, he was elected the AAA-CPA Missouri Chapter President.

Philanthropy

Mr. Cordell is involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors and continually gives back to the legal community. He and his wife, Yvonne, generously made a gift commitment of $1 million in 2014 to establish and endow the Cordell & Cordell Visiting Professorship at their law school alma mater, Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Mo. In 2018, the Cordells pledged $5 million to Washington University to establish a new institute, the Joseph and Yvonne Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law, to study issues of ethics, medicine, and law. The couple will provide annual support to the establishment.
