Joe Cordell Divorce Discussion with WAEC 860 Radio in Atlanta

Love 860 radioThis week, Cordell & Cordell principal partner Joseph Cordell spoke on Love 860 WAEC Radio about fatherhood.

Mr. Cordell discussed the importance of fatherhood, child custody and child support issues that often affect men and the changes he’s seen in the last few years with many men actively seeking out more parenting time with their children.

He mentioned that, in terms of custody, many men who are clients of Cordell & Cordell are “more ambitious than social workers, attorneys or ex [partners] might believe and want more than just scraps from the table.”

Mr. Cordell spoke about the recent trends with fathers, their roles and their motivations to have rights to their children.

“Originally, men were seen as paychecks, and it was believed that the mothers did all the nurturing,” explained Mr. Cordell. “But now, thankfully, guys are coming back and demanding their rightful place in their kids’ lives.”

Joseph Cordell Discusses Financial Advisors and Divorce

financial advisor magazineFinancial advisors and divorce are the focus in Cordell & Cordell Principal Partner Joseph Cordell’s recent column for Financial Advisor Magazine.

In his August 2014 article, “Five Steps to Helping Divorcing Clients,” Mr. Cordell outlines different actions financial advisors can take to better prepare themselves for dealing with clients going through divorce.

Mr. Cordell emphasizes the importance of obtaining Certified Divorce Financial Analyst accreditation as well as sharpening marketing focus, getting information out about accreditation and experience, developing a revenue model for divorcing clients and, ultimately, cultivating a divorce-friendly environment.

“Relationships formed during those trying times not only take a weight off the shoulders of the person going through a divorce but also help create enduring associations that can last for decades after the divorce is finalized,” said Mr. Cordell.

Joe Cordell Discusses Parental Alienation in The Huffington Post

huffington postParental alienation, or the action of one parent to manipulate a child away from the other parent, is a subject more widely recognized today than even just a few years ago.

In a new column for The Huffington Post titled “Is Your Ex Turning Your Child Against You?” Cordell & Cordell Principal Partner and Founder Joe Cordell discussed parental alienation and its impact on many fathers.

In the article, Mr. Cordell mentioned his 25 years of experience in representing men and seeing many situations in which one parent will let personal feelings damage the relationship between a child and the other parent.

“This can be done subtly and unintentionally through occasional belittling comments, to active and malicious ‘brainwashing’ with the intent to replace any love the child may have for the other parent with hate,” wrote Mr. Cordell. “Alienation can be cataclysmic during such an emotional time as divorce.”

Mr. Cordell also pointed out that, in the majority of situations, the primary custodial parent tends to be the person who contributes to parental alienation if it exists. Because many fathers are non-custodial parents, they often become the victim of such alienation.

He made sure to note that those parents who feel that they or their children are suffering from parental alienation should certainly complete every parental obligation that exists and seek the help of a psychologist familiar with the condition.
