Cordell & Cordell Executive/Managing Partner, CEO Scott Trout was recently interviewed on WHO NewsRadio 1040 AM-Des Moines about a number of topics concerning the divorce process, including why January is often referred to as “divorce month.”

“There isn’t any particular event or situation that occurs magically at the beginning of January,” Mr. Trout said. “It probably is most likely a culmination of events over the previous year.

“A lot of our clients at Cordell & Cordell are holistic planners and they think, ‘OK, let’s wait through the holidays and I want to start the New Year fresh.’ They think about the tax implications by waiting until the end of the year and they just make the decision to start the New Year fresh.”

Mr. Trout also discussed the firm’s mission of fighting gender stereotypes in family law and helping men through the divorce process.

“We don’t think it’s malicious or intentional, but we do see courts throughout the country maintain this stereotype and perpetuate the status quo where guys are the ones who have to go get the job,” Mr. Trout said. “We’re also seeing that more women and moms are the breadwinners and we have more guys staying home.

“What we want to do is to try to level the playing field and break those stereotypes.”
