huffington post shared parentingCordell & Cordell Principal Partner Joe Cordell recently wrote a column for the Huffington Post detailing how the shared-parenting movement has gained substantial momentum in 2015.

Nearly 20 states are currently considering measures that would help balance the custody playing field.

This is positive news for divorced fathers as they still face a custody bias that overwhelmingly favors mothers. Around 83 percent of custodial parents are mothers.

“This issue of determining custody is not about pitting divorced parents against one another,” Mr. Cordell wrote, “it is about doing what is best for children after the often harrowing experience of seeing their parents’ marriage come to an end.”

Mr. Cordell noted that last year the National Parents Organization released a Shared Parenting Report Card that revealed that states, by and large, do a poor job of promoting shared parenting. That is disconcerting considering numerous studies have shown that time with both parents is one of the most effective ways to help children cope with divorce.

“Research has shown time and time again that keeping both mothers and fathers involved in their children’s lives as much as possible is the most effective way to reduce the negative impact of divorce,” Mr. Cordell said, “so it is encouraging to see states across the country finally taking action to do what is truly in the best interests of the children.”
