Child custody battles in India can be just as severe as those that are held in the U.S., as the court proceedings can be difficult for all involved parties.

A recent case in New Delhi led to the granting of custody to the father, a rarity in many cases that occur around the world and especially in the United States.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, mothers account for the majority of custodial parents, with more than 82 percent of children of divorce living with them following a split.

The Press Trust of India reported that a woman was recently denied custody of her children, as they preferred to live with their father. The judge decided that it was in the best interests of the kids to have them remain with their dad.

“I am of considered opinion that the paramount welfare of children is with the respondent (father) and their custody will remain with him,” the judge said in the ruling.

According to the news source, the couple had been residing separately since 2005.
