Many theatrical productions, films, books and songs have been written about romantic letters exchanged between two lovers. But a new off-Broadway play is finding inspiration elsewhere. The production, “You’ve Got Hate Mail,” is a comedy based on emails sent during a divorce, the Star-Ledger reports.

The play is co-written and performed by New Jersey natives Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore. The pair have starred in and written 23 plays together, including “Love, Sex and the IRS.”

Their newest performance, which hits the stage each Friday night at the Triad theater in the Upper West Side, is about a cheating husband who accidentally sends a self-incriminating email to his wife. The premise was inspired by Milmore’s personal life. While difficult, the artists were able to find humor in the situation.

“During my divorce, there were some emails that Billy once said, ‘You should save these. They’re funny,'” Milmore told the publication.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the current divorce rate in the U.S. is 3.4 per 1,000 population, while the marriage rate is 6.8 per 1,000.
