The child custody saga in MacClenny, Florida, over four-year-old Miranda Wilkerson continues in a Baker County courtroom, according to First Coast News NBC 12.

Miranda was placed in the custody of registered sex offender Donald Coleman in July, as the individual was considered her legal father since he was married to her mother at the time of the child’s birth, the news source reported.

Her mother was killed in a car accident one month after her birth, and because of Florida state law, Coleman was granted custody of the child instead of her biological father because he was married to the woman at the time of death.

Despite the legislation, the child’s biological father James Wilkerson has petitioned the court to recognize him as her father. His request came after he learned that Coleman was a registered sex offender, according to First Coast News.

According to the Kids Count Data Center, in the state of Florida up to 38 percent of children who are under the age of 18 are living in a single-family home.
