The city of Baltimore, Maryland, has created a new program that would help divorced parents limit the drama and pain that can come with child custody handoffs in an effort to provide a safe environment for kids, NBC WBAL 11 reported.

According to the news source, the city will use a $300,000 federal grant to set up the center for couples to navigate the process in a more peaceful and efficient manner.

“There will be staggered times of arrival and departure for each of the parents. There will be trained security people,” Sheryl Goldstein, a representative from the mayor’s office, told the news source. “All those things are put in place to reduce the possibility of contact between the custodial and noncustodial parent.”

WBAL reported that several poor handoffs that took place between couples had led city officials to create the center.

Forbes reported that the move by the city has led to support from various groups, as the problems that can sometimes come from these handoffs may be eliminated.
