For a Major League pitcher few things are worse than lasting just over two innings and giving up four runs as part of a loss, especially as his team clings to the league’s final playoff spot. But for Red Sox hurler Erik Bedard, his day on Tuesday had an added frustration. According to the New York Post, Bedard was served with child support papers just hours before his start.

The papers were served on behalf of Bedard’s ex-girlfriend Courtney Roberts, the news source reports.

The family law attorney who delivered the news, who was also a fan of the rival New York Yankees, told the publication that Bedard was very cooperative.

Tuesday evening, the Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 7 to 5. The team remains two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card race.

Regarding the season’s struggles for the Red Sox, as well as his own injury issues and personal life drama, Bedard remained professional when talking to the Boston Globe.

“If you play a sport, you have to put all that stuff aside,’’ Bedard told the newspaper. “If you let all that outside stuff get to you, you can’t focus out there.’’
