Two children that were caught in the middle of a messy divorce and child custody battle were found after they were missing for 10 months, according to Florida Today.

Journey Everitt and her brother Trust were reunited with their father, Jim, following their return to Melbourne, Florida, the news source reported.

“They were going through a rough separation and some domestic issues,” Melbourne police Detective Jennifer Hall told the news source. “She decided to take the children and leave.”

Crystal Everitt, the mother of the children, had fled to a homeless shelter in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she had been living for several months prior to local authorities becoming suspicious of the family.

According to Florida Today, a shelter worker at the facility became suspicious when Crystal was resistant to accepting food and medical care for her children.

The Columbian reported that the worker found information online that was posted by the children’s father that described the kids and then contacted authorities to reunite the youngsters with Jim.
